Tuesday's Gone: Week 6 #NFL Game Reviews

Second year quarterback Carson Wentz has the Philadelphia Eagles flying high in 2017, but they face a tough test Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers.

2017 NFL SEASON

Week 6: #NFL Game Predictions (w/ spreads & analysis)
Week 6 results: 0-1 wins (season: 41-37; .526); 1-0 v. spread (season: 38-40; .487)

Philadelphia Eagles 4-1 (+3.5) @ Carolina Panthers 4-1 (45.5): Panthers 24-23 Eagles 28-23
Thursday, 8:25 PM, Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC (Weather: Partly cloudy; mid-60s)

Reasons: This Thursday night the NFL offers one of the best games on paper we’ve seen in what feels like years as the Panthers host the Eagles. There are only six teams with one or fewer losses so far this season and this game features two of those teams. The Eagles have accomplished this with a high-flying offense that is 3rd in total yards and 6th in scoring (27.4 ppg), not to mention top-10 in time of possession (1st), 3rd-down efficiency (1st), yards per play (8th) and turnovers (10th). The Panthers succeeded with their great defense, which comes as no surprise, ranking 2nd in yards allowed and 9th in scoring defense (18.8 ppg). Carolina’s offense, led by the enigmatic Cam Newton (1237 passing yards; 8 TDs), has helped their defense all year by holding the ball (2nd time of possession), and only seems to be getting better. Carson Wentz (1362 passing yards; 10 TDs) has a tough task on the road this week.

Carolina quarterback Cam Newton threw three interceptions and Philadelphia Carson Wentz threw three TDs and therein lies the story of Thursday Night Football. The truth is, Eagles had two takeaways, both within their own red zone, the 14th and 17th yard line, respectively, giving Philadelphia two easy scores. The Eagles defense continued to look great, sacking Newton twice, but this performance was based largely on the disruptive presence of defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, out of the lineup since Week 3. The Panthers had highlights (Kelvin Benjamin: 9 receptions on 13 targets for 99 yards; Christian McCaffery: 10 receptions on 14 targets for 56 yards and 1 touchdown), but continues to relay too heavily upon Newton (71 rushing yards and 1 TD; 1 passing TD). Carolina’s defense played well against a tough Eagles team, and may have lost Luke Kuechly for some time.

Miami Dolphins 2-2 @ Atlanta Falcons 3-1: Dolphins 20-17
Sunday, 1:00 PM, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, GA

The zombie Jay Cutler celebrated Halloween early this year, awakening in the 2nd half to give the Falcons their second AFC East loss in five weeks with the Patriots looming.

Green Bay Packers 4-1 @ Minnesota Vikings 3-2: Vikings 23-10
Sunday, 1:00 PM, US Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, MN

Anthony Barr legally and cleanly ended Aaron Rodgers year minutes into the game, and thus, the Packers season.

Detroit Lions 3-2 @ New Orleans Saints 2-2: Saints 52-38
Sunday, 1:00 PM, SuperDome, New Orleans, LA

The supposedly good Lions defense fell victim to the Saints at home on their turf.

New England Patriots 3-2 @ New York Jets 3-2: Patriots 24-17
Sunday, 1:00 PM, MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ

The Patriots escaped East Rutherford due to a close call that was strangely overturned and then aided by a weird rule that didn’t allow the Jets to recover, giving Tom Brady his record 187th regular season win, to go along with his record 212 total wins.

San Francisco 49ers 0-5 @ Washington Football Team 2-2: Washington 26-24
Sunday, 1:00 PM, FedEx Field, Landover, MD

Kirk Cousins was responsible for all three TDs in a close win for a team that doesn’t appreciate him.

Chicago Bears 1-4 @ Baltimore Ravens 3-2: Bears 27-24
Sunday, 1:00 PM, M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, MD

Justin Howard (167 rushing yards) and a late OT field goal helped rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky (8-16 for 113 passing yards and 1 touchdown) win his first NFL game and send the Ravens into “What the hell happened to us?” Mode.

Cleveland Browns 0-5 @ Houston Texans 2-3: Texans 33-17
Sunday, 1:00 PM, NRG Stadium, Houston, TX

Deshaun Watson showed the Browns they made a huge off-season front office mistake.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2-2 @ Arizona Cardinals 2-3: Cardinals 38-33
Sunday, 4:05 PM, University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, AZ

Nope, you weren’t seeing things. That was Adrian Peterson. And that was also Ryan Fitzpatrick scoring 27 4th-quarter points to almost steal the day from Peterson.

Los Angeles Rams 3-2 @ Jacksonville Jaguars 3-2: Rams 27-17
Sunday, 4:05 PM, EverBank Field, Jacksonville, FL

The Rams rebounded against what is becoming one of the best defenses in the NFL (Rams 249 total yards on offense on 28 minutes of TOP). The future of NFL running backs looks great if this game is any indication (LAR Todd Gurley: 23 carries for 116 yards; JAX Leonard Fournette: 21 carries for 130 yards and 1 TD).

Pittsburgh Steelers 3-2 @ Kansas City Chiefs 5-0: Steelers 19-13
Sunday, 4:25 PM, Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, KS

Antonio Brown (8 receptions for 155 yards and 1 TD) and Le’Veon Bell (191 total yards; 1 TD) shined as the reeling Steelers beat the undefeated Chiefs for the third straight time, and there last seven that Ben Roethlisberger has both started and finished the game.

Los Angeles Chargers 1-4 @ Oakland Raiders 2-3: Chargers 17-16
Sunday, 4:25 PM, Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, CA

The Chargers are suddenly hot and the Raiders are definitely not in a game that traded scores before Nick Novak kicked the winning field goal as the clock expired.

New York Giants 0-5 @ Denver Broncos 3-1: Giants 23-10
Sunday, 8:30 PM, Mile High Stadium, Denver, CO

Of course the Giants wait until they’re missing their three best offensive weapons to be playing the best defense in the NFL on the road for their first win of the season. I guess the Yankees were taking too much of the positive spotlight.

Indianapolis Colts 2-3 @ Tennessee Titans 2-3: Titans 36-22
Monday, 8:30 PM, Nissan Stadium, Nashville, TN

It took a 231-point 4th quarter for the Titans to beat the hapless Colts at home. Jacoby Brissett isn’t that good, which means the Titans are that bad. A win’s a win.

Week 6 byes: Buffalo Bills; Cincinnati Bengals; Dallas Cowboys; Seattle Seahawks

Stay tuned for Week 7: #NFL Game Predictions (w/ spreads & analysis) coming Thursday and Sunday mornings!
